Principal Engineer, Resource and Efficiency for Ads

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 15 years of experience with system architecture, computer architecture, databases, data analytics, or performance optimization
  • 15 years of experience with software development in C++
  • 5 years of experience leading infrastructure built within a tech company

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree/PhD in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science
  • 10 years of experience leading large-scale infrastructure built at Google or in a comparable area within a large tech company
  • Experience in client services engagement
  • Experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems, or networks, and/or experience with compute technologies, storage, and/or hardware architecture
  • Proficiency with root-causing and optimizing performance and resource-utilization problems spanning the hardware/software stack (preferably, ads), all the way from applications to system architecture to micro architecture

About the job

Ads is a complex business application, is highly connected, and often uses shared technologies. This setup offers unique opportunities to drive resource efficiency efforts spanning Ads wide. In this role, you will be responsible for defining and driving efforts to maximize the infrastructure cost efficiency, scaling for the future, and balancing against needs for high availability and performance of services.

As a Principal Engineer, you will partner with Engineering, Product Management, and executive leaders across Ads, to innovate, plan, and drive the compute, machine learning, and network production infrastructure resource management optimization and management strategy. You will work as an executive-level technical leader and drive long-term infrastructure cost efficiencies across the Ads products portfolio. You will be responsible for identifying optimization opportunities, technological investments, and guiding management of budgets and principles for resource profit and loss (P&L).

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $271,000-$399,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Drive the technical roadmap for resource efficiency for Ads.
  • Lead and inspire an organization of engineers across Ads and outside Ads (e.g., Google Cloud and Core) with a goal of driving software and hardware optimizations.
  • Influence executive stakeholders across different Google Product Areas and Core team to drive results related to efficiency.
  • Develop engineering-driven methodology to analyze the current state, and inform the system architecture and design for Ads services.
  • Work as a member of a cross-functional team of Engineers, Product Managers, and other Program Managers.
